( damage control was something akechi was accustomed to, although not on quite so small a scale. and frankly, despite a veritable laundry list of shit he has done, this is one time he may truly embody the innocence he often plays up for the public. he doesn't even know what he is apologizing for. but as it goes, the truth hardly matters - ren is convinced enough of his guilt that akechi has been left with no choice but to assuage him. not only for the sake of his image, but for the shreds of any hope left in cooperation - and perhaps, minutely, because he cannot seem to place the boy too far from his mind, ever since he met him.

in any case, fuck if he knows what qualifies as a proper gift to a peer. adults were more simple; something practical, functional, preferably expensive. but someone his own age...? he's embarrassed to think he had to enlist sakamoto for advice, who provided the options of either a good burger or a good "meme." considering ren annihilated his lunch the other day, he was feeling more than a little petty about bringing him a burger - it held the potential of spoiling anyway, should he refuse, the whole thing seemed like a bad idea.

so there he sat on his resort-branded laptop at 2am, researching what the ever loving hell a meme was.

actually, he came to find he had some experience with them; his fans sometimes dropped these into his social media mentions. they fell into the same genealogy as internet trolls, which he had plenty of exposure to, though seem to focus more on a comical context.
